FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Thomas Edison Park Trip

The NJIT dual-enrollment class MET 103-Fundamentals of Engineering Design and Graphics visited the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, NJ, on April 18. Faculty participating in the field trip included the course instructor, Dr. Kotlowitz, and District STEM Director, Mr. Aytas. This historic site was the Research and Development (R&D) Center for Thomas Edison and technical staff from 1887 to 1930.  Several world-changing inventions, including the electric incandescent light bulb, phonograph, motion picture technology, rechargeable battery, and electrical power distribution, were developed, manufactured, and commercialized at this R&D Center. Edison’s innovative team-based approach to creating advanced technology is now the operational model for modern R&D organizations. This special learning experience reinforced class lectures on technical product development based on integrated contributions from design, testing, manufacturing, and marketing.
