Mecha Lions Compete in VEX Over Under

This year, the PCSST Mecha Lions were back again, but with a different team, in a different competition. After trying out REV last year, the students of the previous team joined hands with the JROTC robotics program, to participate in the VEX Robotics Competition instead.

With new parts, new rules, and a new robot – the mighty ‘Blue Phantom’, our students went to their first tournament in Monroe Township High School on January 27th, where they formed alliances with some schools and battled it out with others. After winning four of the six qualifying rounds, our team was shortlisted for the elimination matches, where we made it up to the quarter-finals, before eventually tipping over, unable to compete further.

Among 22 teams, Mecha Lions ranked 8th, which was a huge testament to how far our team had come. While we had many members involved in our after-school meetings, I would like to recognize Dayvon Mitchell (outreach and strategy manager), Ryson Dennett-Davis (backup driver, assistant programmer), Elizabeth Marchena (notebook manager), Iris Soto (notebook and media manager), Emir Talas (lead programmer), and Aiden Perez (lead engineer and driver) for competing in the tournament.

I am so proud of how the students conducted themselves, and how they took initiative throughout the tournament. We are hopeful that things will only get better from here, and look forward to the next tournament
