The NJIT dual-enrollment class FED 101 – Fundamentals of Engineering Design visited Nokia Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, on November 14. Faculty participating in the field trip included the course instructor, Dr. Kotlowitz, and Principal, Dr. Coskun. Dr. Kotlowitz had an extended engineering career with Bell Labs and the associated owner companies. The class was hosted by the Reliability Physics organization. The class received a guided tour of the on-site museum that showcases advanced technology and commercial products developed by Bell Labs that significantly influenced society and contributed to modern living. The museum tour was followed by an informal Q&A session with several practicing engineers and scientists on STEM study and STEM careers. The speakers interacted with the students and provided personal guidance on rigorous academic coursework, professional skills valued by high-tech companies, and typical activities in the global workplace. This special learning experience reinforced prior class lectures on engineering design practices and technical and nontechnical skills required for academic and professional success.
