The NJIT dual-enrollment class FED 101-Fundamentals of Engineering Design visited Nokia Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, on November 8. Faculty participating in the field trip included the course instructor, Dr. Robert Kotlowitz, and STEM Director, Mr. David Aytas. Dr. Kotlowitz had an extended engineering career with Bell Laboratories and the associated owner companies. The class was hosted by the Reliability Physics organization and the Environmental Technology Laboratory. The class toured state-of-the-art labs where mechanical and electronic failures are investigated and telecommunication equipment is stress tested to evaluate performance. An earthquake simulation test was demonstrated using an actual frame for electronic components. This special learning experience reinforced prior class lectures on robust design practices and product assurance testing as important parts of the engineering design process.
