COURSE: ENGLISH IV
Prerequisites: Must have passed English III.
Description
This course provides students with a framework to meet the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. This course has incorporated representative examples of literature, philosophy, architecture, art, music, and drama from around the world and has the students examine these in an effort to relate to their own cultural heritage. Texts include Twelfth Night, The Kite Runner, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and Americanah. Students also participate in an independent book club with texts of their choice. Instruction emphasizes public speaking and listening skills, incorporating discussion, seminar learning and Socratic seminars regularly to prepare students for collegiate demands. Students will read a variety of genres and they will write for different purposes that include narrative, argument, expository, literary analysis, and research writing. Students will also create presentations and dramatizations inspired by their studies. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts.
COURSE: HONORS ENGLISH IV
Prerequisites: Proficient levels on state testing and/or Teacher recommendation and Passed English III with a B+ or higher or English III Honors with a B or higher
Description
This course is a class designed to push students to a higher level of critical reading and writing capability, while preparing each student for college-level English. Students will learn from more challenging texts with a focus on independent literature circles, and be held to a higher standard than the regular English IV classes. Students will read a variety of genres and they will write for different purposes that include narrative, argument, expository, literary analysis, and research writing. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts.
