COURSE: ENGLISH II


Prerequisites: Students must have passed English I.

Description

This course provides students with a framework to meet the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. This course is devoted to the development of students as sophisticated readers and writers, able to think critically and to express their understandings of a variety of texts such as, Hamlet, The Hate U Give, Speak, and choice books including: The Joy Luck Club, Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Flowers for Algernon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and The Piano Lesson. Instruction also emphasizes public speaking and listening skills, as well as analysis of visual media. Students will read a variety of genres and they will write for different purposes that include narratives, expository, argument, literary analysis, research. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts.

COURSE: HONORS ENGLISH II

Prerequisites:  Proficient levels on state testing and/or Teacher recommendation and

Passed English I with a B+ or higher or English I Honors with a B or higher.

Description

This course is a class designed to push students to a higher level of reading and writing capability while preparing each student for the language arts sections of the NJ State Assessments and SAT Exam. Students will learn from  more challenging texts, such as Catcher in the Rye, and be held to a higher standards than the regular 10th Grade English classes.  Honors students are expected to continue with the rigorous honors track in order to be eligible for AP English classes their junior and senior years. Students will read a variety of genres and they will write for different purposes that include narrative, expository, argument, literary analysis and research writing. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts.
