COURSE: ENGLISH I
Prerequisites: None
Description
This course provides students with a framework to meet the NJ Student Learning Standards. In this course students will write for a variety of purposes, including argument, expository, narrative and research writing. Instruction for this course also emphasizes building students’ stamina as readers. Students will develop a greater affinity for reading through their analysis of required texts such as: The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Romeo and Juliet, as well as, various speeches and short stories. Students may also have the opportunity to self-select independent reading books. Students will be challenged to think critically and be able to express understandings concerning fiction and non-fiction texts and visual media. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts.
COURSE: HONORS ENGLISH I
Prerequisites: Proficient level on state testing and/or Teacher Recommendation and
Passed 8th grade English with a B+ or higher or 8th grade English Honors with a B or higher.
Description
This course is a class designed to push students to a higher level of reading and writing based on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards while preparing students for the Language Arts sections of the New Jersey State Assessments and SAT. Students will learn from more challenging texts and be held to a higher standard than the regular 9th grade English class. Honors students are expected to continue with the rigorous honors track in order to be eligible for AP English classes their sophomore, junior and senior years. Students will read a variety of genres and they will write for different purposes that include argument, expository, narrative and research writing.
