GRADE 8 LANGUAGE ARTS

Description

This course provides students with a framework to meet the NJ Student Learning Standards. Students learn grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and other skills within the contexts of meaningful reading, speaking, writing, listening, and viewing experiences. Students read and respond in writing and through discussion to various fiction and non-fiction selected works such as: The Giver, The House on Mango Street, An Island Like You, A Raisin in the Sun and Julius Caesar. A major component of the 8th grade English program includes self-selected independent reading. Students will continue to develop a sophisticated portfolio of writing including expository, argument and narrative. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts. Students will be prepared for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments.

GRADE 8 HONORS LANGUAGE ARTS

Prerequisite: Proficient levels on state testing and Teacher recommendation

Description

This course is a class designed to push students to a higher level of reading and writing based on the NJ Student Learning Standards while preparing students for the ELA sections of all standardized texts. Students learn grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and other skills within the contexts of meaningful reading, speaking, writing, listening, and viewing experiences. Students read and respond in writing and through discussion to various fiction and non-fiction selected 8th-grade works. Honors students will also read additional, high-level text. A major component of the 8th grade English program includes self-selected independent reading. Students will continue to develop a sophisticated portfolio of writing including expository, persuasive and narrative. Grammar and vocabulary are also learned and practiced in meaningful contexts. Students will be prepared for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments.
