Engineering Bell Labs Trip
The NJIT dual-enrollment class FED 101-Fundamentals of Engineering Design visited Nokia Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, on November 11. Faculty participating in the field trip included the course instructor, Dr. Kotlowitz, and Principal, Dr. Coskun. Dr. Kotlowitz had an extended engineering career with Bell Laboratories and the owner companies. The class was hosted by the Optical Systems and Device Research Laboratory The class had a guided tour of the on-site museum that showcases significant inventions and innovative technologies developed by Bell Laboratories. The class visited state-of-the-art research labs for thermal management of electronics, advanced high-capacity access systems, and quantum communication using photons, ending with a tour of the world’s largest anechoic chamber. The Q&A session with technical staff covered academic preparation for STEM careers and typical activities in the real-world workplace. This special learning experience reinforced class lectures on important components of the engineering design process.
