Arabic Class’s trip to Main Street

In honor of Arab American Heritage Month, PCSST’s Arabic Language and
Culture class took a walking tour of the area of the main street known as “Little Ramallah” and the
block that was renamed “Palestine Way” in 2019. Paterson is home to an estimated 25,000
Arab Americans and it has the second largest Palestinian community in the country. Students
were able to explore their neighboring community and learn about the rich culture and history of
the Arab American population in Paterson, NJ. They spoke to business owners about their
immigrant experiences and the contributions they have made to the city of Paterson over the
years.
They were guided by Raed Odeh a Palestinian-American Business owner and the Deputy
Mayor of Paterson- on this tour they visited a variety of businesses including restaurants, coffee
shops, dessert shops, butcher shops, salons, wedding centers, and even an organic honey shop!
They met with the family members of some of the longstanding businesses of Nouri’s Supermarket
and Cafe and Fattal’s Bakery which were established in 1968 and 1978 respectively, and
learned about how they’ve worked hard to give the community a sense of home for over 50
years. Students got to take in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Arab American community
and were able to gain an immersive experience that taught them more about the neighborhood
surrounding their school.
To learn more about this community here are some articles to share:
