PATERSON CHARTER SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 4-7

4-7 Campus

Science & STEM Program Overview

Grades 4–7 science program connecting core science, inquiry-based learning, engineering design, and Makerspace STEM projects.

Our Grades 4–7 science program combines scientific inquiry with hands-on learning and creative engineering. Through investigations and design challenges, scholars build critical thinking skills, explore scientific concepts, and develop solutions to real-world problems.

Core Curriculum: Amplify Science

Through Amplify Science, scholars take on the roles of scientists and engineers to investigate real-world phenomena. They gather evidence, test hypotheses, and communicate their findings through a variety of learning activities.

  • Grades 4–5: Build a foundation in Earth, life, and physical sciences, exploring topics such as energy transfer, ecosystems, Earth’s systems, and light and vision.
  • Grades 6–7: Explore more advanced, integrated science concepts, including plate tectonics, cellular processes, weather patterns, matter, chemical reactions, and thermal energy.

Hands-On Learning: Makerspace STEM Projects

Scholars visit the Makerspace several times throughout the year to participate in STEM design challenges that connect classroom learning with engineering and technology.

  • Engineering Design Process: Scholars follow the steps of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, and Improve to develop and refine their solutions.
  • Prototyping and Tools: Scholars use a variety of materials, tools, and digital technologies to bring their ideas to life while building teamwork, spatial reasoning, and creativity.
  • Connections to Classroom Learning: Projects reinforce Amplify Science concepts through activities such as building models of sustainable energy solutions and designing structures that withstand natural hazards.
