Fast Cars

This year’s Physics classes participated in a rubber band, balloon, and mouse trap car building project. We viewed several examples of each type car from the internet to give the students ideas for their own cars. A registration form was handed out to each group of four students requesting the name of their team, type of car they would build, a materials list, and a sketch of what their car would look like, then submitted for approval.

Once approved, each group began to build its car during lab period utilizing common household materials as building supplies to include plastic milk jugs, plastic water bottles, cardboard, Styrofoam sheeting, plastic bottle tops or CD’s for wheels, straws, balloons, mouse traps and rubber bands for propulsion. There were many trials and modifications before the cars were perfected. Several different hand held power tools were utilized by the students to build their projects. The only requirement was that the car had to travel a minimum of ten hallway floor tiles under its own power.

Thursday, January 26, 2012 we had enjoy our First Annual rubber band, balloon, and mouse trap car race during morning assembly.(Click Here for pictures)
